SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Prof. Bernard M. Gichimu is a distinguished scholar and researcher affiliated to the School of Agriculture in the University of Embu. He has a PhD in Plant Breeding from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), MSc in Horticulture (Maseno University) and BSc in Horticulture (Maseno University). Prof. Gichimu is a multifaceted researcher with a wide range of skills enabling him to approach agricultural research from diverse angles. His research output extends from crop improvement to other agricultural disciplines including soil management, crop protection, sustainable agricultural production, and socioeconomics. His extensive publication record and the consultancy assignments he has undertaken are testament to his diverse skills and knowledge. He has also fostered several research collaborations and mobilized donor funding. Prof. Gichimu has made enormous contribution particularly to the coffee industry both locally and internationally. His expertise has been recognized by reputable organizations including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Previously, he worked at Coffee Research Foundation as the Head of Plant Breeding Unit for 6 years where he focused on coffee varietal improvement
which culminated with the release of Batian coffee variety. Through his research, Prof. Gichimu aims to empower farmers with technologies, knowledge and practices that enhance sustainable agricultural development and food security in Kenya and beyond.
